Elizabeth Hawkes was the first woman to join the ranks of the Fenian Brotherhood. The daughter of a Birmingham ironmaster, Elizabeth was born in 1847 and trained as a teacher at St. Aidan's College, Cambridge. She married John Hawkes, another Fenian, in 1867
They lived in New York City where they raised seven children. Elizabeth died in 1915 at age seventy-six.
